5 Fall Maintenance Tips for Your Swine Barn
Prepare your ventilation system now for consistent performance, air quality and pig comfort when cold weather arrives.
1. Inspect & Clean Ventilation Fans
Fall is the time to find problems before winter minimum ventilation becomes critical. Clean fan blades, shutters and guards, inspect belts and moving components, and verify that fans are operating properly. Dirt, wear and restriction can reduce the airflow you think you’re getting.
2. Check Inlets & Static Pressure
Winter ventilation depends on controlling where incoming air goes. Inspect inlets for proper movement and sealing, confirm actuators are functioning correctly, and verify static-pressure settings so cold air mixes properly before reaching pig level.
3. Test Heaters Before You Need Them
Don’t wait for the first cold night to discover a heating problem. Clean and inspect heaters, confirm ignition and controls are functioning, and make sure heating and ventilation stages are working together rather than fighting each other.
4. Verify Sensors, Controls & Alarms
Your ventilation system can only react properly when it receives accurate information. Check temperature and humidity sensors, review controller settings and test alarms. Confirm that remote notifications are reaching the people responsible for responding.
5. Transition to Winter Ventilation Strategically
Don’t simply turn ventilation down because temperatures drop. Review minimum ventilation settings, inlet operation and moisture levels as conditions change. The goal is to conserve heat while still removing moisture and maintaining air quality.
