PigTek has added a natural plant-based multi-enzyme manure pit additive to its product line. The PigTek FORMULA 542® Manure Pit Additive is a scientifically formulated blend that helps to reduce organic solids, foaming and crusting in manure pits.

In limited testing, the additive has also been shown to aid in decreasing problem odors by reducing ammonia levels up to 90 percent. The test data collected on atmospheric conditions were taken two feet (610 mm) above the floor – where the hogs normally breathe. The percentage of ammonia reduction varies with seasonal barn ventilation changes.

While other pit additives are microbial-based, FORMULA 542 is one of the few that use enzymes. These natural enzymes feed the existing microbes in the manure so they can digest solids more quickly. In addition to reducing odor, solids, crusting and foaming, FORMULA 542 lowers ammonia and hydrogen sulfide emissions.

The additive also assists in decreasing the facility’s fly population by helping to eliminate locations in the pit for flies to lay eggs.

FORMULA 542 is a customized solution. The additive was originally developed for use in South Korea where pig operations are located close to dense population centers, creating the need for a highly effective solution.
